October is National Orthodontic Health Month, but you’re probably more familiar with another big October event – Halloween!
We know October 31st is the best day to stock up tons of free candy, but if you’re in braces, it’s best to avoid sticky, chewy, and hard, crunchy foods and candies at all costs. These foods can break brackets and snap wires, consequently causing you discomfort and delaying your treatment.
Plus, the day after Halloween is the busiest day in most orthodontic offices for help appointments because of broken appliances from candy.
So what candy can you safely enjoy this Halloween? The doctors at Northern Virginia Orthodontics advise that it’s best to stick to:
- Plain M&M’s
- Plain Hershey Kisses
- 3 Musketeers Bars
- Kit Kat Bars
- Reese’s Cups & Reese’s Pieces
- Chocolate Bars without nuts or caramel
- Nestle Crunch Bars
- Snow Caps
If you are an Invisalign patient – you’re in luck! You can simply remove your aligner and enjoy all of your favorite Halloween candy. Just be sure to brush your teeth thoroughly before putting your aligners back in.
The entire NVO team wishes you and your family a very spooky – and safe – Halloween!
