Education & Experience

Dr. Elvi Barcoma became interested in orthodontics as a teenager after seeing the positive impact it made on her brother’s self-esteem. During a summer break while in college, she asked her own orthodontist in Virginia Beach if she could work at her practice in order to learn more about the profession. In a few short months, her passion for orthodontics grew stronger than ever, and she made the leap to pursue orthodontics as a career.

After graduating as valedictorian of her high school class, she matriculated at the University of Virginia where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. After college she went on to attend dental school at Virginia Commonwealth University where she received her Doctorate of Dental Surgery. While in dental school, Dr. Barcoma was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society for her excellence in academics and leadership, an honor only given to the top students of each graduating class. After dental school, she completed her orthodontic residency at the Medical College of Virginia where she earned her orthodontic certificate and Master of Science in Dentistry.

Dr. Barcoma feels strongly about advancing the orthodontic profession through scientific research and evidence-based treatment. She has published two papers in a major orthodontic journal, The Angle Orthodontist, and is currently working on a third publication.
